Transfagarasan – best road in the world
The Transfagarasan road is found in the heart of Romania, in the Carpathian mountain range, linking the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia.
The road was built by former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu in just four years (1970-1974). The construction of the 90 Km of the road took many hundreds of lifes, 400 of them just building the Vidraru Dam, the starting place of the road.
Transfagarasan was named the Best road in the world by none other then Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear. The road consists of twists and turns across the tallest sections of the Carpathian Mountains between the highest peaks of the mountain in Romania. When it’s openned to public, ussually from July to September (the rest of the year the road is closed for safety reasons), you can enjoy a pure driving pleasure, although the speed limit for the entire road is 40 Km/h.
